Pellet boilers can run automatically in much the same way that gas or oil boilers operate. Most pellet and chip burners use automatic fuel feeders which refill them at regular intervals.
Pellets require moisture content of <10%, while wood chips can vary between 15% and 40%. Some boilers may be capable of burning wetter fuels, but the efficiency can drop substantially. Fuel storage should also be considered as bulk deliveries are often more cost effective meaning a larger fuel store could reduce long-term costs.
